Context & Analysis

Agentic commerce sounds technical, but for Philippine merchants it is the next version of being found online. Search engines and AI assistants are no longer just matching keywords to webpages; they are increasingly acting as shopping helpers that compare products, check availability, and push shoppers toward checkout. That makes a store’s machine-readable data as important as its photos and price tags. If a product feed is stale, inventory is hidden behind a login, or prices are not consistently shown, an AI shopping tool may simply ignore the store or send customers to a marketplace seller instead.

For small and medium enterprises, the practical task is less about adopting a new platform than making existing systems legible. A custom-built site may need better structured product information, clean category pages, fast load times, accurate shipping costs, and clear return terms. On major Philippine marketplaces, the risk is different: merchants may compete inside a black box where algorithms reward price, fulfillment speed, and ratings rather than brand storytelling. Winning will require disciplined operations, not just marketing.

The Philippine angle is real because local buyers are mobile-first, price-sensitive, and still weigh trust heavily. Many shoppers use social commerce, cash-on-delivery, e-wallets, and messaging apps before deciding. AI agents that can summarize options and complete purchases may shorten that journey, but only if payment, delivery, and customer service are seamless. Retailers that cannot guarantee stock accuracy or delivery promises may generate more returns than sales.

Regulators and consumers should also watch data use. The Data Privacy Act, DTI consumer-protection rules, and payment-system standards set by the BSP will matter more when AI tools collect preferences, purchase intent, and location. Platforms and merchants need transparent disclosures, secure payments, and easy dispute channels. For Philippine businesses, the next digital divide may not be who has a website, but whose store an AI can understand, trust, and buy from.
